Tequila brands to avoid – Some big names

Recently I’ve been getting into tequila. I’ve never disliked it. But then again, it’s never been a go-to-spirit for me. However in the last few months I’ve started to get it.

Only thing is there are some ‘bad’ brands out there. And some of them are the ones we know and drink most often.

Tequila has protected name status meaning to be called tequila, it has to come from an area around Jalisco and the town of Tequila! So far so good. However, it also has to be made of at least 51 agave plant to be called tequila. The premium brands and many mid-range brands proudly announce that they are made with 100% agave. They’re the ones you want.

Patron is a good brand – 100% agave. Expensive though

Mixto brands

The ones which are between 51 – 100% are known as Mixto brands. A term I only read for the first time recently. And the problem is what the other 49% consists of. It can be all sorts of stuff including caramel colouring, sugar syrup and or glycerin. Doesn’t sound quite so appealing does it. This article by Ian Chadwick explains the situation in a bit more technical detail.

Turns out many of the big brands have products in this category, including the market leading Jose Cuervo especial. Apparently it’s these other ingredients and congeners which produce those hangovers. This American article on Mashed.com sets out the good guys and the bad guys.

The advice

My advice then is to check whether the tequila you want to be drinking next is 100% agave or not. Avoid mixto brands, and go for the quality stuff.

This article on chowhound entitled ‘Mixto is for losers‘ sets out the position. I  must admit I’m gradually going over to Patron tequila. Both their blanco and anejo are good products. Fairly expensive as spirits go, but probably worth it. Especially if like me, you don’t drink a lot of tequila.
