Why a slow comfortable screw is not as daft as it sounds

Here’s a thought. A slow comfortable screw is not as silly or obscene name as it first appears !

As you’re well aware no doubt, many cocktails have sexually explicit names. But the Slow Comfortable Screw started the trend, and in fact it is a very clever name. Well I think so anyway!

It gives a clue to it’s ingredients. The Slow refers to Sloe Gin, an ingredient in this cocktail. The Comfortable refers (you’re already there ahead of me) to Southern Comfort. The third and fourth ingredients are orange juice & vodka which combined are known as a Screwdriver.

So there you have it ! A Slow Comfortable Screw contains Sloe Gin, Southern Comfort, vodka and orange juice – clever huh?!

As for a screaming orgasm, or a slippery nipple, or sex on the beach, that’s a whole different story !!

80s cocktails

So is the Slow Comfortable Screw a good cocktail? I’d have to say that it’s not one of my favourites. Not in my top 100 in fact. The ingredients all go well together and it is balanced. However I don’t find it an interesting cocktail. It’s all a bit orange juice with some alcohol. I’d say the same about many of the 80s cocktails which contained orange juice – the Freddy Fudpucker and even the Tequila Sunrise. The latter is merely tequila and orange juice really. Oh, yes and some grenadine syrup to make it look amazing. I admit, I like the look of it with it’s layered effect. However I found a way to pimp the Tequila Sunrise up and make it a bit more interesting. Check the Tequila Sunrise recipe here. Adding chilli flavour goes well and seems a natural fit for the whole Mexican tequila vibe.

I also like the 80s cocktails where orange juice was paired up with Galliano. I think Galliano is an underrated liqueur. I’m sure it’ll come back into fashion at some point soon.

What other cocktails with orange juice?

Check out the Blood & Sand which is easy to make with just 4 ingredients. All in equal measures. Scotch, orange juice, cherry brandy and sweet vermouth. I’d never think to combine those 4 ingredients but it works well and is a classic cocktail for a reason.
