Cardamartini

You can never have too many variants of the classic Martini. I’m not really a fan of the original – it’s basically just gin with a splash, a measure or a sniff of vermouth. But I do recognise that it’s a great base for other variations. I’m interested in herb or spice riffs on cocktails. We love herbs and spices in our food so why not try them in our drink?

Cardamom

Cardamom is a particular favourite. I’ve been told that it has an orangey flavour. I’m not convinced by this but I did think it would make an interesting combination in a cocktail. So then I added it to the classic backbone of a Martini – gin and vermouth. I wanted it to look attractive too, so Martini rosato with it’s pink hue was a natural choice. Sadly Martini no longer sell Martini rosato in the UK. The fact that Martini launched products and then don’t support them is frustrating. I talked about that in my blog entry my frustration with the Martini brand

Cardamartini

So the resulting cocktail the Cardamom Martini – aka the Cardamartini combines the following

  • Ophir cardamom gin
  • Martini rosato (or use an alternative such as Lillet rose)
  • Cointreau
  • Cardamom syrup (I used to use Monin which is no longer available, so try Routin 1883)

What’s the Cardamartini like?

It is an exotic twist on a Martini. A classic combination of gin and vermouth in the form of the gorgeous pink rosato. Add a little warming Cointreau. Plus a hit of sweet cardamom. If you like fragrant spicy, this is great.

What else?

If you’re looking for other unusual martinis, how about these 2, both in-house creations.

  • Rosadka Martini
  • Strawberry Martini

Both use slightly unusual ingredients but are lovely summer cocktails and stay true to the principal of a proper martini. Details and full recipes to follow.
