Tipping Point is a modern, aperitivo cocktail, but the best bit is it’s mainly English. By using some English red vermouth you could make this completely English. But more on that later.

I am a big fan of the unusual and bitter Kamm & Sons. Incidentally as a marketing man, I think the name is poor, but the product itself is great. It has a bitterness to it, which means it works well as a cocktail ingredient for the savvy, but you wouldn’t want to drink it on it’s own. It has layers of complexity to it, which means it does the same to the cocktails you use it in.
However add it to the moreish and fantastic Chase Marmalade vodka and some Martini Rosso and you have a great cocktail. Slightly bitter in the Italian Aperitivo style but given that this is quite ‘in’ at the moment, this is a great English take on it. Try this;
Tipping Point
- 35 ml Kamm & Sons aperitif
- 35 ml Chase Marmalade vodka
- 20 ml Martini rosso vermouth
Shake with some ice in your shaker. Pour into a cocktail glass, or an Old-fashioned as an alternative. It was recommended to me to try it with Punt e Mes red vermouth. I did, but I found it too bitter.
As mentioned earlier, you could try it with an English red vermouth and go the whole hog. However the only one I’ve found and worked with is Sacred Spiced red vermouth. For me this is a great ingredient in my creation, the Spiced Negroni. I’m less convinced it works so well in the Tipping Point.
I’m interested in the idea of English cocktails, so if you have come across any using all English ingredients and you’d recommend them, please let me know.
